On 26 April 1917, James Wood was aboard HM Drifter 'Plantin' BF 453 that struck a mine whilst on war service 3 miles east of Anvil Point, Dorset. He was the only survivor. The rest of the crew, including his father and two brothers, were drowned. Leslie Ferguson reported that James Wood, her maternal grandfather, was the sole survivor of the loss of the Plantin, saying that "He clung onto wreckage for some unbelievable amount of time before being picked up. When asked what had kept him from going under, he replied that it was the thought of his mother with all those bairns."2 He married Johnanna Wood at Imperial Hotel, Stirling Street, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, on 12 August 1925.6,7,2,5 James died on 17 July 1937 at 104 Grampian Road, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, at age 42.8,9,10,11,2,5 His body was interred after 17 July 1937 at Allenvale Road, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, at Allenvale Cemetery.11,10,2
