Prior to this he was co-owner, with a William Taylor, of a drapery business called 'Cheyne & Taylor' in the High Street.10 He moved his 'William Cheyne' drapery business to a new location in 1899 at 50 Broad Street, Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.10

William Cheyne established a drapery business in Fraserburgh, called "William Cheyne". Page 9 has an advertisement for his 'new drapery warehouse' at 54 Broad Street, dated 1893. The business was first based at 54 Broad Street from 1893 to 1899 (page 105) and then at 50 Broad Street from 1899 to 1901 (page 105).

His son Cummine John Cheyne continued to run the business during William Cheyne's illness and after his death in 1914.
    In the photograph album of Margaret Helen Pirie (née Cheyne) there are many photographs of William Cheyne's family and staff on "The Strawberry Drive to Cortes", an annual outing to a nearby beauty spot for a picnic, walks, races and a tug o' war. There are also photographs of the shop c1901 at 32 Broad Street.

    Mr William Cheyne, Draper, Fraserburgh, died on Thursday morning at his residence, Elmbank, Grattan Place, after an illness of about a year’s duration.
    Deceased who was 54 years of age was a native of Fyvie, but early in life he removed with his parents to New Pitsligo. After serving and apprenticeship with Messrs J. and C. Forrest, general merchants, Lonmay, he went to Fraserburgh and in company with the late Mr William Taylor, commenced business as a draper in High Street. The partnership only lasted a few years, and Mr Cheyne had carried on an extensive drapery and dressmaking establishment for over 30 years. He removed to extensive new premises in Broad Street some years ago. Latterly the business has been in charge of the youngest son, Mr Cumine J. Cheyne.
    The late Mr Cheyne was a much respected townsman and although he took little active part in public work he always maintained a keen interest in local affairs. Mr Cheyne was for many years a valued member and office-bearer in the Fraserburgh Parish Church and was one of the senior elders, and a manager of Stachan’s School. He is survived by his wife and a family of two sons and one daughter. The eldest son, William, is in Edmonton, Alberta, Mr Cumine Cheyne is in charge of the drapery business in Fraserburgh, and Miss Cheyne resides at home. The funeral took place on Saturday, and was attended by a great concourse of mourners both from town and country. In the Parish Church on Sunday, the Rev, M. P. Johnstone, paid an eloquent tribute to the memory of Mr Cheyne."
