William Watson Cheyne (1886-1971)
     William Watson Cheyne was born on 5 October 1886 at Saltoun Place, Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of William Cheyne and Margaret Watson.
He was listed as head of household's son in the 1891 census at 82 Commerce Street, Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Those recorded in the household were: William Cheyne, head; Margaret Cheyne, wife; William W Cheyne, son; Margaret H Cheyne, daughter; Amelia C Penny, servant.2
Ian Pirie said "As a young man, Uncle Willie went to Canada and worked for the Hudson Bay Company. He became disillusioned working in the dark sheds and warehouses of the Hudson Bay Company and took up the offer of work on a farm in Canada, including fencing. At the weekends, he would go off in to the woods with a 22 calibre rifle and practice by shooting squirrels. As a result he became a marksman. Uncle Willie did military service with the 'Scottish Horse' and in World War I was posted to the Western Front where he was a casualty of a gas attack." The album of Margaret Helen Cheyne contains several photographs of him working on the farm and then in the 'Scottish Horse'.3

William Watson Cheyne was a driver in the Scottish Horse Brigade, Army Service Corps. He married Viola Harwell Sim at 35a Union Street, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, on 9 August 1916.5 William Watson Cheyne was a crofter after 1918 at Knock Croft, Stuartfield, Old Deer, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. William W. Cheyne received the Victory Medal and the British War Medal for service in the First World War with the Royal Highlanders, Regiment of Corps, Army Service Corps as a driver. Regimental number: 203558. Rank: Private.6,7
