BAILIE PIRIE
Mr George Pirie, first bailie of Portknockie, was born and bred in the village he has now seen to rise from obscurity to the status of a burgh. His father, Mr David Pirie, followed the calling of a fisherman, and Bailie Pirie, who is a shoemaker to trade, was born in Portknockie 53 years ago. The Baile started to serve his time at his trade with Ex-Provost Simpson, Buckie, when the latter was in business in Portknockie, and completed his apprenticeship with Mr Simpson at Buckie, serving two years in each place. Bailie Pirie was then wrought for eighteen months with the late Mr John Legg, Portessie, and 32 years ago he commenced business as a shoemaker in his native village. In this he has prospered and established a good trade. His speciality is the manufacture of home-made boots, and Bailie Pirie calculates that he has the largest trade in the north in this particular branch of the industry.
Bailie Pirie is of a quiet and unassuming disposition, and hitherto has taken no active part in the public life of the community, but like the Provost, he is a sound Radical in politics. He is a highly-respected citizen of Portknockie, and from the position which he occupied in the poll – being next to the top – it may be gathered that he has the confidence of the townspeople. Having succeeded so well in business, Mr Pirie is now prepared to devote some of his time to the interests of the burgh, and there will be nothing to complain about if he brings into his duties as a bailie the sense of thoroughness and attention to detail which have stood him so well in business, and there is not the least doubt that he will endeavour to administer even-handed justice to those who happen to appear before him as a magistrate." - [S4582] National Records of Scotland, Valuation Roll, County of Banff, Year 1915-1916, Valuation Roll for the County of Banff for the Year 1915-1916 - Parish of Rathven, Page 385, "Police Burgh of Portknockie, No. 3748, Description: House, shop & workshop, Situation: 408 Portknockie, Proprietor: George Pirie, shoemaker, Occupier: Proprietor, Yearly Rent or Value: £10 0s 0d."

LATE MR GEORGE PIRIE
Many in Portknockie and district will learn with regret of the death of Mr George Pirie, retired shoemaker, who was a well-known business man in Portknockie and was one of the first town councillors of the burgh. Mr Pirie died suddenly at his home, 39 Sunnybank Road, Aberdeen, where he took up residence on retiring from business.
Although he had been in indifferent health for some time, Mr Pirie was out-of-doors on Saturday, but took ill during the evening. He was eighty years of age.
A native of Portknockie, he was in business on his own account there for fifty years. He specialised in the making of the old type of leather sea boots, and conducted an extensive business in Banffshire fishing towns. During the last war he carried out Admiralty contracts. He retired from business twelve years ago.
Mr Pirie gave unsparingly of his time and energies to public work and to all the community in Portknockie. For many years he was a member of Portknockie Town Council, and held the office of first bailie.
He is survived by Mrs Pirie, four sons and three daughters."
