     James Pirie was born on 27 April 1821.1 He was the son of George Pirie and Jean Wilson. James Pirie was baptized on 30 April 1821 at Parish of Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland.1 He was a fisherman. He married Helen McIntosh at Parish of Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland, on 17 November 1840.2
He was listed as head of household in the 1861 census at 185 Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland. Those recorded in the household were: James Pirie, head; Hellen Pirie, wife; Margaret Pirie, daughter; James Pirie, son; Jean Pirie, daughter; George Pirie, son.3
