     Robert Steele Pirie was born on 20 February 1927 at Seafield, Banffshire, Scotland.1,2 He was the son of John Pirie and Barbara Jane Gardiner. Robert was usually known as 'Bert'. He was also known locally as "Bertie Peerie" or "Bertie Steele."3 Bert served an apprenticeship at Herd & Mackenzies in Buckie, and then served in the Merchant Navy (foreign going) as a marine engineer from 1946 to 1952. He returned to shore employment as an Engineer Surveyor in 1952 and was in that capacity in various parts of the country, eventually settling down in Inverness in 1964.3 He married Madge Goodbrand Runcie at Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland, in 1953.4 Robert died on 27 November 2019 at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, Scotland, at age 92.5,2
