On 11 November 1899, the Portknockie fishing boat 'Palestine' BF 1991, which had been herring fishing out of Lowestoft for the past four weeks, was wrecked on Cockle Sands at the entrance to Yarmouth Roads during a fierce southerly gale. The Caister lifeboat 'Beauchamp' was launched and with great difficulty rescued the whole crew, including David Mair "Bobbin", before 'Palestine' disappeared below the waves.
