     Charles Fretwell was born illegitimate on 25 September 1855 at Shipley, Derbyshire, England.1,2 He was the son of James Briggs and Maria Fretwell. Charles Fretwell was baptized on 9 November 1856 at Parish of Cotmanhay, Derbyshire, England.3 Charles Fretwell was also known as Charles Briggs.
He was listed as head of household's son in the 1861 census at Barrow Hill, Staveley, Derbyshire, England. Those recorded in the household were: James Briggs, head; Maria Briggs, wife; Charles Briggs, son; William Briggs, son; Maria Fretwell, mother-in-law.4
