John Mair

     John Mair was born on 23 March 1827 at Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of James Mair and Mary Wood. John Mair was baptized on 1 April 1827 at Parish of Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland.1,2 His family was known by the tee-name of "Bids". He was a whitefisher and fisherman. He married Jean Innes at Parish of Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland, on 3 November 1849.2
He was listed as head of household in the 1851 census at Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland. Those recorded in the household were: John Mair, head; Jean Mair, wife; Mary Mair, daughter.3
John died on 23 November 1857 at sea, off Scar Nose, Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland, at age 30. He perished with the Portknockie fishing boat 'Vigilant' off Scar Nose, Portknockie during a storm. The entire crew was lost.
