     Joseph Sutherland was born illegitimate on 17 April 1875 at Findochty, Banffshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of Joseph Thomson and Jane Sutherland. Joseph Sutherland was a merchant seaman. He married Barbara Phimister at Findochty, Banffshire, Scotland, on 7 September 1900.1
