     James Cowie was born illegitimate on 12 June 1868 at Buckie, Banffshire, Scotland.1,2 He was the son of Alexander Cowie and Barbara Flett. His family was known by the tee-name of "Bullen". James Cowie was a fisherman. He married Helen Sclater at Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland, on 17 September 1890.2
