He was listed as head of household's son in the 1891 census at Church Street, Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland. Those recorded in the household were: Jos Mair "Bobin King", head; Annie Mair "Bobin King", wife; John Mair "Bobin King", son; Mary Pirie, sister-in-law.2
John Mair was a fisherman. He married Jessie Mair at Parish of Seafield, Banffshire, Scotland, on 22 December 1905.
