     James Charles Slater was born on 7 June 1913 at 73 Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland.1,2 He was the son of James Slater and Isabella Mair.
He was listed as head of household's son in the 1921 census at 12 Reidhaven Street, Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland. Those recorded in the household were: James Slater, head; Isabella Slater, wife; William Slater, son; John Slater, son; Francis Slater, son; Alexander Slater, son; Isabella Slater, daughter; James C. Slater, son; Katherine Slater, daughter.3,4
James Charles Slater died circa July 1951 at in Goole Docks, Goole, Yorkshire, England. A report in the 'Goole Times' for 6 July 1951 states that at about 5 o' clock James Charles Slater was returning to his ship (Hestor) with the mate from his ship, after visiting friends on another ship on the other side of the West Dock. He turned to wave goodbye and fell into the dock. The mate and a local boatman jumped in after him but could not find him. The dock was dragged for half hour before he was found. Artificial respiration was administered by the fire service for nearly an hour but to no avail. The report gives his address as 15 Lilley Crescent, South Shields.2
