John died on 26 April 1917 at sea, 3 miles east of Anvil Point, Dorset, England, at age 20. He drowned with the loss of HM Drifter 'Plantin' BF 453 that struck a mine whilst on war service 3 miles east of Anvil Point. The entire crew except his eldest brother, James Wood, was lost.4,5
