     John Wood was born on 6 December 1813 at Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of Alexander Wood and Jean Forbes. John Wood was baptized on 8 December 1813 at Parish of Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland.1 His family was known by the tee-name of "Deacon". He was a fisherman. He married Ann Falconer at Parish of Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland, on 16 November 1841.2,3
He was listed as head of household in the 1851 census at Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland. Those recorded in the household were: John Wood, head; Ann Wood, wife; Margret Wood, daughter; John Wood, son; Ann Wood, daughter; Jean Wood, daughter; Isobella Wood, daughter; Ann Hay, servant.4
John died on 23 November 1857 at sea, off Scar Nose, Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland, at age 43. He perished with the Portknockie fishing boat 'Vigilant' off Scar Nose, Portknockie during a storm. The entire crew were lost. They were George Pirie "Dodle" (skipper), John Wood "Deacon", James Mair "Bids", John Mair "Bids", James Mair "Pundlar", John Mair, John Innes, William Mair "Howdie", William Wood "Post".5,6,3 He was buried on 21 January 1858 at Cullen Old Kirkyard, Old Church Road, Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland.5
