He drowned with the loss of HM Drifter 'Ladysmith' BF 1528 in a gale whilst on war service at the mouth of Milford Haven. The entire crew was lost.9,10,2 He was buried after 27 December 1915 at Hillhead Cemetery, Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland.10
