He perished with the Portknockie fishing boat 'Vigilant' off Scar Nose, Portknockie during a storm. The entire crew was lost. They were George Pirie "Dodle" (skipper), John Wood "Deacon", James Mair "Bids", John Mair "Bids", James Mair "Pundlar", John Mair, John Innes, William Mair "Howdie", William Wood "Post".5
