James Mair

     James Mair was born illegitimate on 14 August 1862 at Helmsdale, Kildonan, Sutherland, Scotland.1,2 He was the son of James Mair and Catherine Sclater. His family was known by the tee-name of "Shavie". James Mair was a fisherman and herring drift net fisherman.
He was listed as head of household's son in the 1881 census at 19 Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland. Those recorded in the household were: James Mair Shavie, head; Cath.
