     Jane Cowie was born on 10 June 1902 at Helmsdale, Kildonan, Sutherland, Scotland.1 She was the daughter of Alexander Cowie and Margaret Ross. She married Alexander Mair at The Institute, Portsoy, Banffshire, Scotland, on 5 September 1924.1 As of 5 September 1924, her married name was Jane Mair. Jane died on 25 August 1948 at on board the steam ship 'Moonlight', near Ardlamont Point, Loch Fyne, Argyll & Bute, Scotland, at age 46. Alexander Mair and wife Jean perished with the steam ship 'Moonlight' which was carrying a cargo of granite chips from Furnace, Loch Fyne, for Ormidale, Kyles of Bute. The weather had been fair, but deteriorated rapidly after the ship had passed Skate Island. The ship foundered and sank. The deck hand survived, but the other three members of the crew and the engineer's wife were lost. Alexander Mair, who was a member of a relief crew on the 'Moonlight' that day, had been the ship's engineer.2,1,3

"Moonlight" on the 25th August, 1948, near Ardlamont Point, Loch Fyne, found that the loss of the ship was caused by the shipping of heavy seas, and the development of a severe list which may have been due to the shifting of cargo.
