     David Mair was born on 16 February 1846 at Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of Alexander Mair and Margaret Wilson. David Mair was baptized on 13 April 1846 at Parish of Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland.1 His family was known by the tee-name of "Shanker".
